Job Title: Principal -Secondary School
Location: Kakuma and Kalobeyei Settlement Areas – Turkana West Sub- County, Kenya
Reporting to: Education Officer
Contract Type: 1 Year Fixed Term Contract

Operational Context/Role
LWF is seeking to recruit a suitable candidate for the position of Secondary School Principal. As part of the LWF Education Program in Kakuma, this individual will serve as the team leader of the school and implement the educational objectives of the institution to yield the highest standards of student achievement and academic excellence. Also provide effective instructional leadership and build constructive relationships with parents and other education stakeholders.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Education Officer and in collaboration with other education team members, the Secondary School Principal will perform the following responsibilities and tasks:
Teaching and Administering Teaching Functions
- Teaching his/her subject of specialty and supervising the implementation of the curriculum in the entire institution.
- Ensuring that students are adequately prepared, registered and presented for the National Examinations in accordance to the Kenya National Examination Council Regulations.
- Ensure the school is up-to-date with innovations, from teaching practices to new technologies, as well as develop creative and responsive approaches to teaching and learning.
- Assess and identify capacity gaps in teaching and support staff and organize for training and development opportunities.
- Provide leadership in guiding the various co-curricular activities and school-based events and external activities including competitions among others.
School Administration
- Assume responsibility for other legal matters in the day-to-day running of the school.
- Formulating overall aims and objectives for the school and policies for their implementation
- Serve as Secretary and advisor to the Board of Management
- Organize staff, Board of Management and parents’ meetings;
- Overall organizer, coordinator and supervisor of all the activities in the institution and being responsible for improving and maintaining high training and learning standards.
- Prepare and supervise the preparation of school reports, records, lists, and other paperwork appropriate for the effective administration of the school.
Human and Physical Resource Management.
- Co-ordinating specific training and learning activities in the institutions.
- Participate in the recruitment and evaluation of the school’s academic staff in liaison with the Education Officer.
- Build effective relationships with parents, education partners and external stakeholders through effective communication to allow for appropriate and timely sharing of information.
- Meeting with other education professionals, and representing the school at conferences and other events outside the school.
- Provide the guidance and counselling for the staff and students in the school.
- Maintain high standards of student & staff behaviour/discipline and apply appropriate behaviour modification interventions when required.
- Responsible for planning, acquisition, development and maintenance of physical facilities at the institutions.
- Ensure safety and security of the institutions’ human and physical resources.
- Oversee prudent management of institutional resources;
Financial Management and Financial control
- Serve as the accounting officer of the institution and ensure prudent utilization of financial resources in the school;
- Identify school needs advice the management on the procurement of goods and services needed, maintain all inventories and ensure availability of the necessary facilities and items;

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
QUALIFICATIONS
- Be a Kenyan citizen;
- Be in possession of Bachelor of Education Degree (BED) or Bachelor’s Degree and Post Graduate Degree in Education from a university recognized in Kenya;
- Must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
- Must have maintained a clean record of service;
- Strong leadership and demonstrated skills in management with ability to build strong and highly motivated team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of packages.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
EXPERIENCE
- Have at least 3 years’ experience as a principal or deputy principal of a Secondary School.
- At least one (1) year of professional experience in an NGO and/or international organization is an added advantage
- Working experience in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Settlement Areas in a similar position.
- Proven track record of performance;
