Terms of Reference

Main Purpose of the Role:

The Radiologist Specialist is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic radiology services in accordance with Augusta Victoria Hospital policies, professional standards, and applicable regulations.

The Radiologist Specialist performs and interprets diagnostic imaging examinations, provides timely and accurate radiological reports, supports referring physicians in clinical decision-making, and contributes to patient safety, quality improvement, education, and multidisciplinary patient care.

2. Key Responsibilities

The Radiologist Specialist shall:

• Interpret and report diagnostic imaging examinations, including X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, and other imaging modalities within the physician’s scope of practice and privileges.[
• Ensure that radiological reports are accurate, clear, clinically relevant, and completed within the required turnaround time.
• Review patients' clinical information and previous imaging studies when necessary to support accurate diagnosis and appropriate recommendations.
• Perform or supervise ultrasound examinations and other diagnostic or image-guided procedures according to granted clinical privileges.
• Provide radiology consultations to physicians and other authorized healthcare professionals regarding appropriate imaging examinations, findings, and recommendations for further investigation.
• Communicate urgent, unexpected, or critical imaging findings promptly to the responsible treating physician and document the communication according to hospital policy.
• Participate in the daily workflow of the Radiology Department and assist in prioritizing urgent and emergency examinations.
• Participate in on-call, weekend, holiday, and emergency coverage according to the approved departmental schedule and hospital requirements.
• Ensure compliance with radiation safety principles and support the appropriate use of ionizing radiation, including adherence to the ALARA principle.
• Verify that imaging examinations and procedures are clinically justified and performed according to approved protocols and professional standards.
• Work closely with radiographers, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, tumor boards, clinical conferences, and case discussions when required.
• Support the development, review, and implementation of imaging protocols, clinical guidelines, departmental procedures, and quality standards.
• Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities, including peer review, clinical audits, incident reviews, and monitoring of relevant departmental indicators.
• Report patient safety incidents, equipment-related concerns, or other risks through the appropriate hospital channels.
• Maintain complete and accurate patient documentation and ensure appropriate use of the hospital information systems.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with hospital policies concerning privacy, information security, and medical records.
• Participate in teaching and supervision of residents, interns, medical students, radiographers, and other trainees when assigned.
• Participate in continuing medical education and maintain professional knowledge and competencies in diagnostic radiology.
• Maintain all required professional licenses, registrations, certifications, and clinical privileges.
• Contribute to research, scientific activities, presentations, and departmental development when appropriate.
• Perform other professional duties related to Radiology as assigned by the Head of Radiology Department and/or Medical Director.

3. Patient Safety and Quality

The Radiologist Specialist is expected to:

• Place patient safety and quality of care at the center of all clinical activities.
• Ensure appropriate patient identification before procedures and examinations.
• Follow hospital policies regarding contrast media administration, allergy assessment, renal function requirements, and management of adverse reactions.
• Follow infection prevention and control requirements.
• Minimize unnecessary radiation exposure and promote appropriate imaging utilization.
• Escalate critical clinical findings and safety concerns without unnecessary delay.
• Participate in departmental and hospital-wide quality and patient safety initiatives.

4. Professional Conduct

The Radiologist Specialist shall:

• Demonstrate professional, ethical, and respectful behavior toward patients, families, colleagues, and other hospital staff.
• Work collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding all patient, employee, and hospital information.
• Comply with Augusta Victoria Hospital policies, procedures, codes of conduct, and applicable professional regulations.
• Maintain professional independence and integrity in clinical interpretation and reporting.

5. Qualifications and Requirements

Education:

• Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognized medical school.
• Successful completion of an accredited specialization/residency program in Diagnostic Radiology.
• Recognized specialist qualification in Radiology.

Experience:

• Relevant clinical experience in diagnostic radiology following completion of specialist training especially that related to breast imaging, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology is preferrable.
• Experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Strong knowledge of diagnostic imaging and radiological interpretation.
• Competency in relevant imaging modalities according to approved clinical privileges.
• Ability to recognize and appropriately communicate urgent and critical findings.
• Good clinical judgment and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, continuing professional development, and evidence-based practice.
